Can a music teacher moved into IT industry?
That was one of the questions that we received last night during the Primed For Success mentoring session. The answer is of course boleh! Just have to understand what are the transferrable skills that a music teacher could bring to the IT industry.
For myself active listening is my number one transferrable skill from my time jadi doctor dulu.
When a patient tells me that they have chest pain, I have to listen attentively to the details to probe more. If the chest pain is on the left side and is of the heavy fullness type then I worry about possible heart attack and will ask more about their risk factors for heart attack.
The active listening skill is very useful at the corporate workplace. It has helped me communicate better with my team and external customers to uncover their needs.
When interviewing, it is good to highlight the transferrable skills that you can bring from your current job. This is even more important when you want to switch industries. You want the interviewer to know that you understand the roles and responsibilities and has the right skills to transfer over.
