Is it boasting if I include my achievements in my CV?
That’s what one of the students asked me when I did my talk in IMU University last week.
Such innocence.
And shows how much of a problem this ‘merendah diri’ is in our culture.
We are told from young to be humble, to not speak big about ourselves and don’t speak back to elders.
Mesti merendah diri, jangan cakap besar dan jangan melawan cakap orang tua.
All are good advice except when competing for jobs in the open market.
When you are competing for jobs, tak boleh la merendah diri.
You must know how to talk about your achievement.
Write it in your CV and discuss it during interview.
Be proud of what you have achieved.
There is a place for merendah diri and it’s not while you are job hunting.
