I overdosed on pizza, pasta, gelato and espresso. Alhamdulillah, I managed to get away for 2 weeks holiday recently. Jalan-jalan cari makan Italian food.
What did I realise after the overdose of all things Italian?
It’s good to have a rough plan of where to go but be flexible and go with the flow. I had a plan to visit the main cities in Italy (Milan,Venice, Florence and Rome) but no definitive plan once I was there. Just like with your career, it’s good to have a rough idea where you want to be in 5-10 years time but be flexible and see what happens. Kena ada some kind of long term plan but don’t be too stress kalau plan tak menjadi.
Certain things are not negotiable though, so book it, such as tickets into the world famous Uffizi art gallery in Florence or to see the ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo Da Vinci in Milan. Book the tickets or you won’t get in when you want to. I didn’t book the tickets so tak dapat la masuk. Similarly certain things in your career are not negotiable. If you want to be a doctor, you must get a medical degree. No other options. If you want to get promoted, you have to network. No other options. Tak de short cut ya.
It’s also important to remember to just enjoy the holiday – it’s not a competition. It’s easy to get distracted or FOMO when talking to other travellers or tourists about what exciting tours they have done or planning to do. Just concentrate on your own experience. Do it at your own pace. Rileks-rileks ok. Similarly with your career, it’s easy to get distracted by comparing yourself with your peers and colleagues. Concentrate on your own career and your own experience. Do what you love and love what you do.
Lastly, I also learnt that my team can survive without me for a couple of weeks. Ok je to tinggal them for a bit. No disaster happened. Thank you team for being well behaved. I bought you all some chocolates as a reward.
