
My beautiful mother was a difficult woman to please.
When we have guests coming to the house, she would make sure that she herself cooked something for them. Takeaway food or ordering from Grab was not an option. Mesti masak sendiri.
Then the table has to be set properly for the guest. Matching plates, beautiful glasses and the right utensils. Big spoon for the main meal and small spoon for the desserts. Cannot campur-campur. And the paper napkins have to be folded properly.
And when they leave, she would always give them some buah tangan. Maybe some mangoes from her garden, or some keropok or maybe some extras from the dishes that she cooked.
Her attention to detail used to drive me crazy.
But now I know why.
It’s to make her guests feel special.
All those little things made her friends, our neighbours and our relatives feel special. Thats why they all loved to come and visit her.
She should have been a consultant in the service industry.
She knew how to make people special.
