‘He is not a doctor anymore’
That’s what my handsome father used to say when I changed my career from clinical medicine to work in a pharmaceutical company.
It’s not his fault that he didn’t quite understand about my work. Ya lah dia tak paham.
I am still a doctor. I am still using my medical knowledge. I am still making an impact to patients life.
Infact I can make an impact to a bigger number of patients through the work that I do now. I am part of a huge dedicated team researching, developing and making new treatment available for different diseases.
Some of these medications are innovative treatment offering new benefits that have never been seen before.
Doctors working in clinics and hospitals is only one way of helping patients.
The healthcare ecosystem is big and complex and we doctors can make an impact to patients in many other ways in this ecosystem.
My handsome father dah lama tak ada but I hope I’m still making him proud even though I’m ‘not a doctor anymore’.
