Focus on Your Strengths or Weaknesses?

It’s more better to focus on your strengths rather than improve your weaknesses.
Do you agree with that?

Early on in my career, I would have disagreed. I would want to improve my weaknesses. But after I attended this leadership course in St Gallen, Switzerland I remember vividly the lesson when our trainer told us that we should be focussing on our strengths instead.

His reasoning was let’s say for skill A you are currently at 20%, if you improve it by another 20% then you will get to 40% je. For skill B if you dah already at 80% and you improve it by another 20% then you can get to 100%! With such a high level of competency, this would definitely make you very distinguishable.

An example for myself, when I was in Germany my proficiency in the German language when I moved there was essentially 0%. I knew that memang tak boleh get to 100%. It would take too much effort. Therefore I didn’t worry so much about it and did the German lessons with the aim of being able to order food at the restaurant!

One thing that I have always been interested in and quite good at is about presentation. Therefore this is one area that I am constantly putting effort in to improve my presentation skills. I watched TED talks for inspiration, I bought the TED talk book, bring some great trainers into the company and even got a vocal coach in to improve our speech. The next plan is to bring a trainer to teach us about copywriting.

So there you go 2023 is just around the corner and I am sure you will be having discussions about your self-development. So list down your strengths and find ways to make them your towering strengths.
