My 3 most memorable networking mistakes.
Moments when I want the ground to open up and swallow me.
1. Asking stupid question
I once asked a very important doctor from China how many children does he have. Of course la the answer is only one because China at that time has a one-child only policy. He politely answered that he has one daughter. Face palm moment.
2. Asking sensitive question
Another time I asked a lady whether she has any children. Usual small talk question. Then she answered no she doesn’t have one because she cannot get pregnant. She has a severe chronic disease & the treatment that she’s on is not suitable for pregnancy. OMG so kesian and I really didn’t know how to respond to that.
3. Getting the name wrong
This one memang totally unforgivable. I’ve been talking to this guy throughout the whole evening and as we were leaving the event I said ‘Goodbye Mr A’ but that’s not his name. Adoi malunya. All I could do was to apologize profusely. I teach people to remember names and I also cannot do it. Shoot me.
There you go, mistakes happen and you move on.
I hope I wont do it again especially that name thing.
