Don’t Be A Victim. Be A Player

I quit my job early on in my career. My boss said I wasn’t working hard enough when I was already working 12 hours a day and was close to burning out.

I thought how can I work for someone who doesn’t appreciate my work? Being young dumb and full of dumb I resigned straightaway. Memang geram betul that day.

For a long time my narrative about the incident is about my bad boss who was an a-hole. It’s only recently that I have managed to tukar the narrative to include ‘did I do enough to let him know about the progress of the work that I was doing?’

Whenever we have a problem or something bad happens, it is very easy to put the blame on other people. I am the Victim. They are the bad people. Bukan salah saya. Diaorg tu yang tak tau buat kerja.

Instead we should be approaching it with the Player mindset. Instead of blaming other people, admit that we could do better also. For example, instead of getting angry and marah-marah at the driver that is not letting you change lane, you should be thinking that next time I will not daydream while driving and will make sure I get into the correct lane earlier.

Instead of getting angry when the Airasia staff at the airport wouldn’t let you check in because you are 2 minutes late, you should be thinking that next time I will leave my house 30mins earlier to make sure this doesn’t happen again. ‘On the way’ awal sikit!

I hope it’s clear from the examples how to change your mindset from being The Victim, to being The Player. It is not about blaming yourself, it is about the positive attitude of taking charge of the situation.

Don’t be a Victim. Be a Player.
