I resigned from being a Specialist Registrar in Renal Medicine to start afresh in a pharmaceutical company. People around me told me not to do it and tunggu dulu until I finished my specialist training and become a consultant. But I really cannot tahan anymore so I just did it.
I gathered up the courage and took the plunge.
18 years later I am still in the pharmaceutical industry and have enjoyed every minute of it.
Since then I’ve heard many other stories of people who changed careers to pursue other interests. Lina Ali left her corporate job to become a full time artist. Ranukka Singham also left her corporate to job to become a consultant in personal image and branding. Eric Siew left his doctory role to do something more creative with his digital marketing company.
Without doubt changing jobs is stressful. It’s up there amongst the top 3 most stressful life events. The other two are getting married and moving house. So for your own sanity, jangan la
be all gung-ho and do all 3 things at the same time.
When you are thinking about changing jobs then do the pros and cons. If changing job is favorable to you then be courageous and do it. People often asked me “how do you know that you were ready”. The answer is I didn’t know for sure that I was ready.
But I do know that if I didn’t resign from my renal medicine training, I wouldn’t have been in the pharmaceutical industry. I would not have had an amazing 12 years working with Boehringer Ingelheim travelling to all corners of the world with the job.
Be courageous.
