3 top career learnings that you can apply for the Water Rabbit Year.
- I am my own CEO in charge of my own career.
With this mindset you understand that you are in charge of planning the progress of your career. No longer are you waiting for your manager to send you for training or to give you the next big project. You sendiri tahu which skill training that you need and when to volunteer for that new project work bila ada opportunity.
- Networking and exposure is the key for career progression
I was exposed to the concept of PIE as the determinant for career progression. Performance, Image and Exposure. Performance accounts for 10%, Image is 30% and Exposure is 60%. Good performance opens the door for career progression and then it’s your Image and Exposure that matters. Therefore mesti spend time working on your Image and Exposure and not just rely on your good performance. ‘My good work will speak for itself” is not true.
- Giving and receiving feedback is the key to performance improvement.
Giving feedback should be a part of a normal 2-way conversation between a manager and their direct reports. Kalau tak da feedback macam mana people can improve? Good feedback sends the message of a job well done and they should continue to do the same. Negative feedback will let them know what was the problem and what can be done to improve the situation. There are many methods of giving negative feedback and personally I like the PEW or the BEER method.
So there you go 3 things to take away today:
- Take charge of your own career
- Improve your image and exposure
- Give and look for more feedback
